BOOM SHIRE BUILDS ON RECORD YEAR
Building activity in Mareeba Shire continues to grow with more than $1.26 million worth of approvals being granted in the past three weeks.
Council has approved plans for backpackers/workers accommodation as the first stage of a planned multi-million dollar development announced for land within the Kenneally Rd/Mareea Connection Rd area.
The development will take place in two stages, starting with the accommodation, which will have access from Kenneally Rd. The second stage will include motel that will have access from Mareeba Connection Rd.
Mayor Mick Borzi said the increased level of building has continued its upward trend with the 2006/2007 figures already well ahead of the record-breaking comparative period last year.
Apart from climatic and services advantages, Mareeba Shire land values, while increasing, still offered buyers and investors excellent growth potential, Cr Borzi said.

Mareeba and Atherton shires are in an extended boom with strong population growth and building approvals rolling along at record levels.
The approvals show that despite a leap of more than $100,000 in house values in both shires over the last five years, interest in Tableland property remains strong.
In Mareeba, approvals are at an all time high with nearly $5 million worth in March alone.
"A review of figures for the year to date has confirmed the current level of activity is 12.43 percent above last years record year to date figured and is clear proof that the Mareeba Shire economy continues to be the powerhouse of the area west of Cairns," Mareeba Shire Mayor Mick Borzi said.
He said despite the boom he was not concerned any "bust" was on the horizon.
"It is pleasing to note that in response to council's strategic and planning activities, the record building activity of the past few years had been sustained and there is every reason to expect it to continue," Cr Borzi said.
